ICE MARATHON???? Tell me about that!!!
From Byron on Tue, Mar 02, 2010 at 14:27:42 from 128.187.0.164
Hey all, thanks for the warm welcome. Sorry to be slow to respond, I'm just learning how to use the tools on the site.
The annual McMurdo Ice Marathon is a ton of fun. I'll post some pictures. Basically, a bunch of crazy people in McMurdo get together and put on a marathon. It's actually very well organized, (this year we even had mileage markers!) and well supported (I'll post some pictures of the aid stations (there are 7 for the whole route). I brag about winning my division, but what I don't divulge is that there are only 4-5 other people in my group... in total there are usually only 15-20 people who run it each year.
The course is run entirely on the Ross Ice Shelf, so it is basically at sea level, and flat. We run on the groomed road that goes from the ice/land transition near Scott Base out to the ice runway (airfield where the planes come and go) and then back. Participants have the option of doing a half marathon, or skiing it (full/half).
It's challenging, and unlike any other marathon I've run, but definitely my favorite. (definitely NOT a fast course though!)

I'm still trying to learn my way around the blog tools -
I'm not sure the best way to put images in my blog, but you can at least view some of my photos (and captions) from the McMurdo Ice Marathon at:

I'll send you a private message with instructions on how to post pictures.

Burt is the PRO with the pictures for sure! Very cool race, though. WOW!!!! And, hey, a first is a first, take credit!!!

Okay, I just looked at the pictures and I totally have to laugh at the "tips" jar at the aide station. That is funny. Was anyone carrying cash???? But the men on the couch are classic. If it were not for the penguins (meaning it had to be freezing), I would be tempted to run this one! Okay, not really, I hate cold.

Getting ready for the WH Yeti - a 5k uphill run, followed by 2 more miles uphill on snowshoes and then 2 more back down the hill to the finish:

only 20 buck registration, almost everyone gets prizes (good stuff from the sponsors!), and all proceeds go to the local volunteer fire department. I did it last year, and hands down it was the funnest race.

Boy, it's been a long time since I've been here. Looking at my PRs, it's sort of depressing thinking everything is downhill from here.
